Javanese Wayang

Puppet, is a unique performance. We are confronted with art in the shadows. Wayang means shadow self. Puppets, in the Javanese language is the abbreviation of Wewayangan, which could mean a shadow or hope, delusion, but it also could mean vision. Puppets, in a symbolic meaning shadow of life. The stories in bringing the stories of exemplary lives that are not only explicit but more to the implicit.

There are many types of puppets are known in Indonesia (read: Java), among others:

1. PUPPET PURWA
   Wayang Purwa includes the classic story about Barathayuda. Family war Baratha (Barathayuda; Baratha = Family Baratha, Yuda = War).
2. PUPPET Madya
   Includes the stories that revolved around the story of Raden Parikshit (Raden Arjuna’s grandson) who later manifest into the story of Raden Panji.
3. PUPPET Gedog
   Puppet Gedog bring the story of Panji stories in the mid-tenth century until the early arrival of Islam in Indonesia in the mid 15th century.
4. PUPPET PEGON / PUPPET Sadat
   Pegon puppet stories lifted Islamic stories
5. KLITHIK PUPPET (PUPPET Krucil)
   This type of puppet Damarwulan includes stories about the Queen to marry after Wungu Kencana Ayu defeated and killed King Blambangan, Menakjingga. 6. PUPPET REVELATION

7. PUPPET SHOW
   Puppet show is a kind of puppet that resembles bolted 3-dimensional puppet (marionette = doll). This type of puppet play many regions especially in West Java, the Sundanese language. The names of the characters was a little different from the existing puppet in Yogyakarta and Solo, as for example the name Gareng in central Java became Cepot, the puppet show West Java ..
8. PUPPET WONG
   Wayang Wong (wong = uwong = human) is that the puppet show played by a man (not a doll, nor a piece of skin). Brought many types of stories, both from Mahabaratha, Ramayana, and other legends. The difference is Kethoprak premises show that the wayang wong diaolg entirely on bringing in the form of tembang, no narrator, all the movement / action in bringing the dance though, and of course a different costume.

There are many other kinds of puppets, such as the Wayang Beber is a story about the Great Menak Wong, Suket Wayang, Wayang Kancil (containing animal stories / fables), puppet Potehi, Panji Puppet, Wayang Bali, and even today there also appears puppet modern or contemporary puppets.
